Friday 5th March - walk *** - Trimley Marshes – sunny periods and
cold.
Another cloudy day here in Felixstowe with a cold breeze from the NE so
spent the morning at home, exercising and being entertained by our crazy
kittens:) With a few glimpses of sunshine we decided to make a sandwich and
bike over to the only bird hide still open at Trimley Marshes Nature
reserve after our bird watching friend Roger said he had seen a Great Egret
there recently. This was also a good chose of destination as it offered
some shelter from the cold wind so we set off around 12.45 taking the
footpath around Felixstowe Academy where the hedgerows were full of white
blossom and catkins, spring is getting closer! Then along Trimley High Road
turning left into Cordys Lane which leads to the reserve, a popular spot
for walkers but it is a long way so it is always better to bike it! It is a
nice lane with a bank of trees to the left blocking of Felixstowe docks
with open marsh and farmland to the right. We were about half way along
when we spotted around 20 deer along way off including two white ones:)
Stopping to get my other camera with my big lens out of my rucksack to get
a few pics but it is very hard to keep the camera still especially on full
zoom and I am in desperate need of a monopod as I broke mine last year:(
Was wondering if anyone has one, they are not using and could sell me?
otherwise Ebay here I come! We soon reach the hide which is up a slope a
half mile before the main reserve which offers good views across the
wetlands but there didn’t seem much about only grazing geese! Then the
resident Marsh Harrier makes an appearance and there is a large flock of
wader’s way off in the distance over the Orwell! Then in the distance we
spot the Great Egret, hard to miss really, a large white bird the size of a
heron, the first we have seen here in the UK:) We had a pleasant half an
hour but it was too cold to stay any longer so we continued onto the River
Orwell at the end of the docks with the hedgerows full of pussy willow in
bloom, just stunning! Then back again, the deer are still there a fraction
closer so take a few more pics, I get a couple nearly in focus before
taking the footpath across the fields which were not too muddy. Though the
dock, up Ferry Lane and home for a warming cuppa and cake:)
